closeThe list of 700 post offices that could be closed nationally does not include any in Lexington, local spokeswoman Susan Wright said Tuesday.
The post office has sent the list of potential candidates for closing or consolidation to the independent Postal Regulatory Commission for review, and officials say more might be added.
Wright said four in Louisville — the Beechmont, Plainview, Buechel and Valley stations — are being examined. Each of those is a retail window operation, meaning no letter carriers work there. Those are the only Kentucky offices in the Lexington district's area that are being considered for closure.
The move comes as the post office is facing a $7 billion loss this year despite a 2-cent rate increase. The agency has shed 150,000 workers since 2000, removed hundreds of mail collection boxes and taken other steps to save money.
