Herald-Leader Sports Columnist Mark Story has looked back at Kentucky basketball games since the 1983-84 season, when the Herald-Leader began its electronic archive, and has selected his top 25 most memorable games. One game will be revealed each day until Nov. 11. Check each day to see where your favorite game was ranked.
No. 5: Georgetown 53, Kentucky 40 (NCAA Tournament Final Four: March 31, 1984 in the Kingdome, Seattle)
Mark Story's comment: Kentucky raced to a 29-22 halftime lead against Patrick Ewing and the fearsome Hoyas. The second half was a UK nightmare. Somehow, the Cats of Sam Bowie, Melvin Turpin, Dicky Beal and Co. shot a horrid 3-for-33 from the floor after halftime as Kentucky endured one of its most head-scratching setbacks.
Excerpt from the original game story: The 9.1 was the percentage UK shot -- if "shot" is the proper word -- in a second half in which the Wildcats became the gang that couldn't shoot straight. … UK's starters, so heroic this season, were zip for 21 in the final 20 minutes.
"When you see your starters shooting like that, you ought to walk away," (Coach Joe B.) Hall said. "That's a case where you set a trash can on fire and come back the next day. There had to be some electrical device sending out sound waves around that basket."
