Herald-Leader Sports Columnist Mark Story has looked back at Kentucky basketball games since the 1983-84 season, when the Herald-Leader began its electronic archive, and has selected his top 25 most memorable games. No. 3: Kentucky 99, Louisiana State 95 (Feb. 15, 1994 in Pete Maravich Assembly Center, Baton Rouge, La.)
Mark Story's comment: LSU led Kentucky by 31 points – 31! – with 15:34 left in the game. Then UK unleashed a rally for the ages, capped when Walter McCarty buried a three-pointer from the deep corner with 19 seconds left to give the Cats the lead for good. The 31-point, second-half deficit surmounted was the greatest road comeback victory in NCAA history.
Excerpt from the original game story: (Coach Rick) Pitino counseled patience at halftime. Playing "possession by possession" might erode LSU's 48-32 halftime lead, he said.
When LSU extended the lead to 68-37 at the 15:34 mark, the Cats changed their objective.
"My stories were over with," Pitino said. "I just wanted to make it respectable and not lose our confidence."
