    Word for the Year

I admit it, sometimes I let the little stuff get to me. And I further admit that sometimes I react to stressors and disappointments by using words that aren't very ladylike. I want to change that behavior in the coming year. So I am choosing a new word to use instead of those less-than-polite ones...

    "I'm moving out"

So Dan and I were at Harry’s, waiting for our lunch to arrive, and he leaned forward and said, “I’m moving out. Three of my buddies and I have found a place.”   My first reaction was, predictably, a little bit of shock. I really had no idea he was planning...

    School supplies

One of my favorite things about going back to school when I was a kid was shopping for school supplies. Receiving that list of things we needed for the year was almost as exciting as seeing my friends once again.   At the end of the first day of school, when my brothers and I came...

A fond farewell to a faithful furry friend

Last month, I had to put my sweet puppy boy, Spotty, to sleep. He was 16 and had a stroke.   I first met Spotty about 13 years ago. He belonged to an ex-boyfriend. At first Spotty and I did not like each other. We were each jealous of the attention the ex paid the other. The first...

    Cold War

You gotta love Kentucky. We go right from cold weather to summer, with just a smidgen of springtime to get us ready for hot weather. And the onset of summer means war breaks out in my house.   Dan wants the air conditioner cranked down to 68 degrees. I am perfectly content to set ...

    May I remind you ... ?

May I remind you that the month is half over – the month when the weather is supposed to be warming up – and I still have my space heaters going and I’m still wearing my heavy winter coat PLUS a sweatshirt underneath?   May I remind you that this is the time of...

    Watching the Wedding

I know a lot of people have gotten their fills of the Wills-and-Kate wedding hoopla and wouldn’t lose any sleep to get up and watch the ceremony this Friday at 4 a.m., but I’m planning to watch it.   I got up that July morning in 1981 to watch Wills’ parents, ...

    Is God playing Survivor?

I admit, albeit reluctantly, that I have gotten hooked on the reality TV show “Survivor.” I didn’t mean for this to happen. The show just kind of sucked me in despite myself, and now I make sure I am home on Wednesday night to catch the latest episode. This season, anyone...

    You laugh now ...

Dan and I have a generally good relationship. We banter and tease and tweak each other a lot. For example, this morning he said to me, “Why don’t you make a big jug of sweet tea for us to have on hand in the fridge?”   “My mom made the best sweet tea...

    Open wide the windows!

Ah, it’s here at last! The day I have been longing and looking for since the first chilly wind blew across the Bluegrass and I had to pull out my coat, crank up the heat and say goodbye to warm weather.   It is the day of the first warm spring breeze, the day when I open wide...
