Billy Joel bade a stirring farewell to Shea Stadium on Friday during an electrifying, sold-out final show at the same ballpark where the Beatles famously ushered in a new era in rock 'n' roll four decades ago.

He was joined by an all-star lineup of friends including Paul McCartney, who told Joel, "Came here a long time ago. We had a blast that night and we're having another one tonight."

"Good evening, Shea Stadium. Is this cool or what?" Joel told the crowd at the New York Mets' home field, which is to be razed after the baseball season to make way for a new stadium across the street.

"They're gonna be tearing this place down, but I wanna thank you ... for letting me do the best job in the world," he said.

The show paid homage to Shea's baseball glories, with Mets highlights playing on jumbo screens during "Zanzibar." But the concert also was a mark of the stadium's place in music history.

Ledger's compelling Joker thrills, saddens fans

As Chris Finegan watched Heath Ledger's stunning portrayal of the Joker on Friday in "The Dark Knight," he couldn't help but think of another actor who wasn't on the screen: James Dean, who also died prematurely and tragically, nearly 53 years ago.

"Heath Ledger is going to have the same impact on our culture as James Dean did," said Finegan, one of many fans across the country who were both awed and saddened by Ledger's performance.

"He went out with a hell of a bang," said Finegan's son, Alex, 18, who wore a T-shirt emblazoned with Ledger's leering Joker face in cracked white makeup and those red lips frozen in a sickening smile. "He stole the show. It was everything I expected and more."

Manhattan movie theaters are not usually packed at 9 a.m. on weekdays, but there was not a free seat to be seen at the AMC Lincoln Square multiplex on Friday morning, and lines lengthened all day. Many fans were back after trying and failing - like the Finegans - to get into packed midnight performances.

Media By Numbers, a tracking firm, said the Warner Bros. film, directed by Christopher Nolan, set a box office record for a midnight debut, bringing in $18.5 million Friday from midnight screenings in 3,040 theaters - many of them open 24 hours. That bested the 2005 performance of "Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith," which took in $16.9 million at its debut. "The Dark Knight" figure didn't include any of its 3 a.m. or 6 a.m. showings.

Got a brand new bag? James Brown items auctioned

James Brown mementoes ranging from his signature capes to a medical bracelet fetched thousands of dollars Thursday at an auction, which the soul icon's children protested.

Fans and collectors packed a Christie's salesroom as more than 300 lots of Brown's belongings were sold, bringing in a total of $857,688, the auction house said. Bidding rocketed past estimates for many of the items, which included some of the Godfather of Soul's furniture, musical instruments and a poem Muhammad Ali wrote for him.

"Late Show with David Letterman" band leader Paul Shaffer bid $32,500 to win the medical bracelet, which went for more than 100 times its presale estimate, Christie's said. The bracelet said Brown, singer of hits such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)," was a diabetic and was allergic to penicillin.

Brown died of heart failure on Christmas Day 2006, at age 73. His estate has been mired in turmoil and contention.

Court-appointed trustees announced in January that the singer's possessions would be auctioned, in part to pay taxes his estate owed. His former business managers tried unsuccessfully to block Thursday's sale, and Brown's children lambasted it.

A biopsy will be performed on the kidney that was removed this week from Boston Symphony Orchestra and Metropolitan Orchestra music director James Levine, his brother said Wednesday.

Doctors in New York removed the kidney Tuesday because a cyst was causing pressure and discomfort.

In a statement released Wednesday by the BSO, Tom Levine said doctors had "made it clear that it is common procedure for tests, including a biopsy, to be performed on all vital organs surgically removed due to the development of a cyst."

He said test results will not be known for "some time."

The 65-year-old conductor is to remain hospitalized for several days. His next scheduled performance is Sept. 18 at the Met.

Jon Bon Jovi's next stop on the road has nothing to do with his band's tour. Fresh off a free concert in Central Park, Bon Jovi is taking a break.

The rocker's Arena Football League team keeps on going. Up ahead for the Philadelphia Soul - the San Jose Sabercats in the ArenaBowl XXII in New Orleans. Bon Jovi will be there, but he'll leave his guitar and his greatest hits behind.

"I'm going there as the owner of the Soul," Bon Jovi said on Tuesday.

Jon Bon Jovi was set to meet with the Soul and the coaching staff before the band's final concert Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. The team planned to present Bon Jovi with the National Conference trophy.

"It's really rewarding," he said by phone hours before the final show. "We're proud of the whole organization. We've built a team of character. Coach (Bret) Munsey has been everything that we've hoped for. Fingers crossed, one more to go."

Fleet Foxes getting more praise

I've made quite a few references to the Fleet Foxes over the last few weeks. I try to stop writing about them but they won't let me.

See there's the direct link to the Tri-Cities as Foxes member Christian Wargo played in the Crystal Skulls with Tri-City guy Ryan Phillips. Then there's the fact the music mag elites won't stop drooling. Rolling Stone just wrote up a piece on the band calling their debut "impressive."

But the most clever and flattering description came in a little blurb breaking down the formula of their sound. "We do the math for you: (Band of Horses) X (The Beach Boys) + (Final Fantasy) = Fleet Foxes. Now you could easily insert My Morning Jacket in place of Band of Horses but that's a different conversation. They totally copped their style!

But that doesn't mean I don't still like them.

Schuyler Robinson is at the pinnacle of a career that began with a little clandestine organ playing.

Growing up in Lake Forest, Ill., Robinson started studying piano at age 5, playing by ear the first three years. As a teenager, he became interested in "the sheer power and mechanics of the organ.

"My brother was a musician, and he taught me how to get into the church and turn on the organ," Robinson says.

Robinson seated himself at that console of keyboards, buttons, levers and pedals and acted on some wisdom he now imparts to his students at the University of Kentucky: "Trust the intuitive element. Let yourself be free with this instrument that can seem rather daunting."

He flipped open a hymnal and started to play. If anyone at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest was annoyed at the surreptitious organ playing, the payoff was a new church organist.
