Thinking of adopting a dog?

There's no better time than now. October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Area animal shelters are filled to the brim with all types and sizes of lovable pooches just waiting for a good home.

Looking for a purebred? An adorable mutt? A young dog? An older one? Big dog? Little dog? You name it, they've got it.

This time of year, shelters are especially inundated with puppies, due to dogs' natural breeding cycles, said Susan Malcomb, president of the Lexington Humane Society. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that 70,000 dogs and kittens are born in the United States each day and six million to eight million cats and dogs enter American shelters each year. Only half find homes.

Locally, the Lexington Humane Society placed nearly 5,000 animals last year and took in hundreds more pets in 2007 than the year before, Malcomb said. Right now, the agency has nearly 250 cats and dogs in its shelter and another 50 in foster care waiting to be adopted. The Paris Animal Welfare Society has between 80 and 90 puppies and dogs available. And the Woodford Humane Society has more than 50 dogs and 191 cats waiting for homes.

CHICAGO . Katie Popovich recently accompanied her boyfriend to a Chicago animal shelter in search of a dog. When a beagle-border collie mix immediately nuzzled against them, they were smitten.

But the 22-year-olds received a considerably chillier response from the human behind the counter.

"It seemed like we were instantly thrown into this category that we were just kids and not responsible," she said, adding that they are now talking with breeders.

After years of public education campaigns urging would-be adopters to visit shelters for their cats and dogs, many prospective pet owners say they feel about as welcome as a case of fleas.

"Hope is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul," Emily Dickinson wrote. Later in this poem she compared hope to "the little bird that kept so many warm."

Reflecting on Dickinson's poem, it's not surprising that birds would bring some comfort to people who are grieving. Robert Milward, owner of Milward funeral homes, thought so when he saw an exhibit with birds at a trade convention about eight years ago. He ordered six birds immediately.

Both Milward funeral homes have had birds ever since.

Lexington resident Caroline Stanfill is a fan of the birds, and often visits them when she attends a visitation at Milward.

In October 2005, Gip Gibson took a trip to Haiti with members of the Frankfort-based Haitian Needy Children's Foundation. After a 12-hour journey from the airport in Port-au-Prince to the mountains in Haiti's southwest . across barely existent roads, reduced to traveling by donkeys and wading across waist-high rivers . Gibson and his group made it to their destination: the tiny village of Samadek.

Up to that point, the journey had seemed like "an adventure," he said. The need in Haiti, the Western Hemisphere's poorest country, still seemed abstract.

That all changed for Gibson at 5 a.m. his first morning there, as he awoke to see flecks of movement coming down the mountainsides. It was children in their red-and-white school uniforms, literally walking hours over mountaintops to make it to the small school nearby.

"Right then I knew I couldn't continue to live my life just for myself," said Gibson, a former professional theater lighting designer.

In addition, Communities will add arts events, previously listed in the Arts . Life section, to our county calendar listings. To get your events on the list, go to http://calendar.kentucky.com.

We hope you enjoy the additions to the section. We welcome feedback and suggestions, and story ideas.

One soccer field, roughly 30 7- and 8-year-old girls, dozens of balls and an ever-moving maze of simultaneous dribbling and passing drills.

It sounds like a recipe for mass chaos, but the coaches at the Lexington Futbol Club's new academy make it work.and make it fun.

"Stay with the ball," yells Jim Tussey, the academy's director, in the middle of the field as the girls circle their drills around him. "Watch your passing."

In its first year, the LFC Academy program . classified for players "U9," or under age 9 . focuses on fundamentals of the sport, not on winning or losing.

The man suffers from severe chronic depression and mood disorders. In the past he has worked several jobs for very short periods of time but has not had stable employment.
Heather Orihuela was shocked last year when her daughter Brianna was diagnosed with Down syndrome at 1 week old. It wasn't news that Orihuela expected to hear, given that she's 26 and that prenatal screening tests hadn't e_SDHpindicated that anything was wrong.

Even after the first screening test, conducted at the hospital when Brianna was born, came back positive, Orihuela didn't believe it. It took 14 days and results from the second positive test for the news from her pediatrician to sink in. "It was devastating. When you get the news, it feels like the worst thing ever," she said, "but it's such a blessing in disguise."

Rather than getting angry or feeling sorry for herself or Brianna, Orihuela "dove right in" to get as much help for her daughter as she could find. One of the biggest helps was connecting early on with the Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky, which connected Orihuela with other families who had experience in raising a child with Down syndrome.

It hasn't all been easy.

When Lexington artist David Carter paints his images of Keeneland, University of Kentucky basketball, area horse farms and local distilleries for the walls of the Richmond Road Texas Roadhouse this month, he'll be doing it for a good cause.

Carter has had the contract to paint murals for Texas Roadhouses throughout the country for more than 10 years, and he's been after local management for a while to let him repaint the one at Richmond Road. It was the first of about 500 Texas Roadhouse murals he has painted, and he thought it was time for a revamping.

Then an idea came to him: why not make the revamp a fund-raiser for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Kentucky's Buddy Walk at Keeneland on Sept. 27? He offered to paint the mural for free if Texas Roadhouse was willing to donate to the Buddy Walk the fee it would have paid.

Carter's two colleagues, Lexington-based artists Ted Hall and David Soileau, who are helping to paint two scenes of the mural, readily agreed to donate their time to the project.

The West Jessamine County High School Band in Jessamine County is set to receive $110,000 to buy new instruments for the marching and concert bands over the next three years. The money came from the school board as part of $250,000 allotted to all band programs in the county.

"We got $110,000 for our school because our school was in the greatest need," said Rex Payton, band director at West Jessamine.

The school already has used $60,000 to buy instruments to use in this year's marching show, including mellophones, sousaphones and a marimba. Next year, the band will begin replacing its concert instruments.

"Our concert tubas really look like someone threw them down a flight of stairs," Payton said. "They're held together with zip ties ... and we'll have to use them this year."

The American Red Cross has assisted the family, but payment of two months rent will help tremendously. After that, they will be self-sufficient and able to manage on the husband's disability benefits.

Starting next week, you'll notice some changes in the Communities section.

By popular demand, we will again include Fayette County lawsuits in our For the Record section, along with births, marriages and divorces and inspection scores for restaurants with critical violations.
