Free weekend events at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea are as follows:
■ Friday, 10:30 a.m to 3:30 p.m., Ron Owens of Mount Vernon will demonstrate the creation of baskets from willow branches.
■ Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Greg Kirkland of Elkhorn will demonstrate wood-turning using a variety of hardwoods.
Playground project
The Richmond Civitan Club and the City of Richmond are raising funds for a handicap-accessible playground at the Lake Reba Recreational Complex. Fund-raisers will continue through 2008. Blast at the beach
A Boonesborough Beach Blast fireworks show will be from 6:15 to 9:15 p.m. Thursday at Boonesborough State Park. The free event, with a $3 parking fee, will feature concessions and a DJ. Call (859) 527-3131.
Lake Reba event
The annual Fireworks Extravaganza at the Lake Reba Recreational Complex in Richmond will take place at 4 p.m. Friday. The planned schedule for this free event is as follows:
■ 4 p.m., introduction and welcome (food vendors will be set up at 3 p.m.)
■ 4:05 to 4:40 p.m., ”Tiny Elvis,“ Will Reynolds
■ 5 to 5:40 p.m., Southern Storm
■ 6 to 6:40 p.m., Michael D Band
■ 7 to 7:40 p.m., Faded Blue
■ 8 to 8:40 p.m., Jonathan Singleton
■ 9 to 10 p.m., Rissi Palmer
■ 10 to 10:25 p.m., the Mammoth Fireworks Over Lake Reba Display
The fireworks will be accompanied by a patriotic music medley, which can be heard on the Coyote, 100.7 FM, starting at 10 p.m.

The Madison County Quilt Square Project has issued a colorful brochure illustrating and describing the quilt squares hanging on 30 barns in the county. The brochure, available at the Richmond Tourist Office, 345 Lancaster Avenue; Richmond City Hall; and the Madison County Extension Center includes a map of the barn locations. Speech in Honduras
Dr. Joe Beckett, athletic training education program director at Eastern Kentucky University, recently spent a week helping Honduran students, faculty, administrators and Olympic officials avoid injuries to athletes and enhance their performance. Beckett was one of five U.S. sports medicine professionals invited by Athletes in Action to make presentations to more than 100 attendees in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.
