Loosen the purse strings for this St. Jude fund-raiser

- jwatts@herald-leader.com

Imagine, ladies, getting a nearly new Kate Spade bag — retailed at about $245 — for about $20.

Let that sink in.

  • If you go

    What: Bags for Babes

Where: Beamer's Salon, 525 Southland Drive, Lexington

    When: 11 a.m to 6 p.m. July 26

For more information: Call Susie Beam at (859) 489-8214

Now imagine that $20 was going to help cover the medical expenses of sick children.

Okay, stop imagining.

This dream will come true on July 26, when Beamer Salon, located on Southland Drive, hosts its second annual Bags for Babes event.

At the event, Susie Beam, owner of the salon and founder of Bags for Babes, will sell an assortment of donated name brand and leather purses, costume jewelry and candy bars to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.

Every purse, she promises, will be $20.

”Every woman loves a good bargain on a purse,“ she said.

Beam said she hopes to raise more this year than last, when the sale raised $1,100 with about 100 donated bags.

She's taking donated purses at the salon between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday through the day of the sale.

”I know a lot of people got Gucci bags for Christmas,“ Beam said. ”Hopefully they'll give us their old ones.“
