Three educators from Northern, Central and southeastern Kentucky have been named the state's teachers of the year.
Durrell "Butch" Hamm, who teaches English at Larry A. Ryle High School in Boone County, was named overall Kentucky Teacher of the Year.
Jan Vaughn Horn, a fifth-grade language arts teacher at Clark County's Shearer Elementary School, is the Elementary School Teacher of the Year.
Melissa Evans, who teaches seventh-grade science at Corbin Middle School, was named Middle School Teacher of the Year.
The awards, sponsored by Ashland Inc., were announced Friday in Frankfort.
Hamm received $10,000 and a commemorative glass bowl from Ashland Inc. and will receive a sabbatical or suitable alternative gift from the state Education Department.
Horn and Evans each received $3,000 and a customized art-glass vase from Ashland Inc.
Twenty-one other teachers from around the state received awards.
