■ Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 2185 Garden Springs Drive, will sponsor a Homeless Awareness Rally beginning at 7 p.m. to raise awareness of an upcoming Multi-Faith Build, a collaborative effort from Lexington Habitat for Humanity and several area churches. Call (859) 277-6096.

■ More than 3,000 people are expected to assemble at the Johnson Center Field at 11:55 p.m. on the University of Kentucky campus to break the Guinness World Record for the largest water balloon fight. Students and Lexington residents are invited to participate. To learn more about UK’s Christian Student Fellowship, the group sponsoring the event, contact matt@ukcsf.org.

■ Tibetan Buddhist Community of Lexington will have its second teaching on the Six Paramitas from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. TBCL meets at 1800 Gayle Drive in Lexington. ■ Consolidated Baptist Church, 1625 Russell Cave Road, Lexington, will hold its annual Jesus Rally from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Green Acres Park on LaSalle Road. The event will include food, games, and free haircuts and manicures for youths. Call (859) 299-8559.

■ New Zion United Methodist Church, 122 New Zion Lane, will celebrate African-American history at the New Zion Day and Basket Meeting. The event will feature a street fair, home cooking, arts and crafts vendors and live gospel music. ■ Southland Christian Church, 5001 Harrodsburg Road, will begin its message series It’s All Greek to Me at 5:30 p.m.

■ John Stiers, an ordained minister, is starting a new church in Lexington called New Creek Christian Church. New Creek’s first service will be Aug. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. Stiers’ first sermon will be Sept. 6. He will discuss his fight with kidney failure. ■ St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 511 Thurman Drive, will sponsor a dinner and a spiritual play Aug. 30. Dinner will be at 4:30 p.m. with play performance at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 to $10 for children, $25 for adults and $20 for seniors. Call (859) 294-5646.

■ Tibetan Buddhist Community of Lexington will present a slide show of Tibet on Aug. 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. TBCL will also hold two teachings on karma next month. Part 1 is on Sept. 6 and part 2 is Sept. 13. Both teachings will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No previous knowledge of Buddhism is necessary. Teachings are free; donations are welcome. ■ Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, 180 East Maxwell Street, will host this year’s first fall Arts and Letters Live presentation on Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. Guest speakers will be Stan Brunn, a Fulbright Scholar who spent last fall in Semipalatinsk, a closed military industrial city in Siberia, and his wife, Natasha. They will present photos and stories. On Sept. 15 at 6:30, Maxwell will hold a viewing and discussion of Uncounted: The New Math of American Elections in the Marshall Parlor.

■ Faith in Action: Elder Outreach connects volunteers with older adults to help them stay in their homes by helping with non-medical daily activities. Volunteers may donate as much or as little time as they would like. The next free orientations will be Sept. 8 from 6-7 p.m. at the Tates Creek branch of the Lexington Public Library, or Sept. 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Scott County Senior Citizens’ Center. ■ Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 533 East Main Street, will host the Linker-Linker-Linker Concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 31. Featured will be John Kevin Linker, organist at Good Shepherd, and guests from the Netherlands Henk Linker, organist, and Valeria Boermistrova, mezzo-soprano. Donations only; no reservations required. Good Shepherd will also host a free Ministry Faire following the 10 a.m. service on Sept. 7. There will be a covered-dish parish picnic, information about the church and an inflatable Noah’s Ark for children, as well as music by Aaron Weaver and Jeremy Rhodes.

■ The Consolidated District Laymen will have their annual Men-in-White at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4, and a week of inspirational preaching from Sept. 8 through 11 at 7 p.m. each day. Both will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church at 237 East Fifth Street. The Laymen will also march in the annual Roots and Heritage parade 8 a.m. Sept. 6.

■ Victory Baptist Church, 2261 Armstrong Mill Road, will host the peacemaker seminar, a biblical conference in resolving personal conflict, conducted by Church Transformation Ministries. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 6. The cost is $10 per person with a maximum of $20 per family. The cost will cover all seminar materials and lunch. ■ The First Uttingertown Baptist Church will observe Annual Family and Friends Day on Sept. 7. Michael Rice and the congregation of First Baptist Church Glasgow will be the 3 p.m. guests.

■ Campbellsville University will host several guest speakers at the 2008 Pastors and Church Leaders Conference on Sept. 25-26.
