Edmunds Inside Line has reported that Toyota is .studying whether to cancel the planned replacement for the Camry-based Avalon..

Prius to be built at new Mississippi plant

Toyota Motor of Japan said Thursday that it would build its popular gas-electric hybrid sedan, the Prius, in the United States for the first time as it tries to meet surging demand and struggles with falling sales of big trucks.

Starting in 2010, Toyota plans to make the Prius at a new factory in Blue Springs, Miss., that was originally intended to assemble sport-utility vehicles. Toyota said that shifting production to the Blue Springs plant, which is under construction, will help it alleviate shortages of the Prius, which gets an average of 46 mpg and has months-long waiting lists at most dealers.

Toyota also said it would stop building its two largest vehicles, the Tundra pickup and the Sequoia sport-utility vehicle, for three months before permanently halting production of the Tundra next spring at one of two plants that make it.

The strategy shift will have no effect on production at the Georgetown plant, Toyota spokesman Rick Hesterberg said Thursday. The Kentucky plant makes the Camry, the Camry hybrid and the Avalon and this fall will replace the Solara with the crossover Venza model.

A retrial has been set for next April for a Georgetown man found guilty in the January 2004 death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

In October 2004, Roger L. McBeath Jr., 26, was found guilty of shooting 18-year-old Ashley Lyons of Georgetown. Her family said she was meeting McBeath to show him ultrasound picture of the unborn baby.

The Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that McBeath should get a new trial because a jail informant overstepped his bounds by questioning McBeath in jail about the shooting and the defense was not allowed to question the accuser, which denied McBeath's Sixth Amendment right.

The retrial was scheduled for April 17-30, 2009, the Commonwealth Attorney's Office said. The next court hearing is scheduled for Oct. 6.

Development plans are still being made for an 850,000-square-foot mixed-use retail center, The Shoppes at Equestrian Crossing, in Scott County, said C.J. May, president of Lexington-based May Commercial Group, which is developing the center with CBL . Associates Properties Inc.

The preliminary development plan is expected to be completed in the next couple of months, he said. The planned site for The Shoppes at Equestrian Crossing, between Wal-Mart and the Toyota plant, is already zoned for retail development.

It does not appear that the project can be completed before the 2010 World Equestrian Games, as originally planned. The slowdown in the economy is affecting the expansion of retailers, he said.

.That's one thing we don't control ... because the tenants that are involved have their own expansion criteria,. he said. .We try to follow their pace as best we can..

GEORGETOWN . This city's garbage problem is mounting.

On Monday, sanitation employees said they feel overwhelmed since crews were reduced from three workers to two to alleviate the city's budget problems. And they say they fear they could lose their jobs if the city decides to privatize trash collection.

Crews did not pick up trash at 450 homes Friday. They picked up garbage on those routes Monday, but about 350 homes on the Monday route still had trash left out.

Sanitation crews handle about 2,400 homes daily, not including garbage from businesses or schools, sanitation dispatcher Roger Cook said.
