2 SCHOOL BUSES, PICKUP COLLIDE; DOZENS INJURED

Dozens of people suffered minor injuries Monday when two school buses and a pickup collided on Interstate 65 in Louisville. Police spokesman Phil Russell said at least 40 people, including several students, were taken to area hospitals to get checked out after the accident. Russell said a car pulling out of an emergency lane set off a chain-reaction collision. "The driver of a pickup stopped to avoid the car and was hit by a school bus from Fort Knox," Russell said. "Then the bus from Nelson County hit the other school bus." Russell said no charges would be filed.
GRAND JURY GETS FATAL ACCIDENT CASE

The case of a man accused of leaving the scene of an accident in which a University of Kentucky student was killed April 13 has been sent to a grand jury. Shannon D. Houser, 36, who has pleaded not guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with physical evidence, appeared in court Thursday morning. UK freshman Connie Blount, 18, was crossing South Broadway at West Maxwell against the traffic signal about 2:30 a.m. when she was hit by a truck going south on South Broadway. Blount died at UK Hospital. Houser was arrested about two weeks later. Police impounded the truck from Houser's driveway on Detroit Avenue and matched damaged truck parts to debris at the scene of the wreck.

It's put-up-or-shut-up time for the towns around Lexington that have talked for years about sharing in a regional water system.

At a Bluegrass Water Supply Commission meeting Thursday, a June 2 deadline was agreed on to decide whether the commission -- acting on behalf of some of its members -- will buy into Kentucky American Water's newly approved treatment plant and pipeline.

"The window of opportunity ... is rapidly closing," said Damon Talley, the commission's attorney.

The big question: Which towns are willing to make a commitment?

If the commission agrees to buy 5 million gallons of water a day, Kentucky American would increase the capacity of its plant from 20 million gallons a day to 25 million. The commission would own 20 percent of the plant and pipeline, with the construction and operating costs falling only on the towns that get the water.

A developer wants to build a $50 million medical complex in south Nicholasville, and has received offers of support from University of Kentucky Healthcare and Danville-based Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

The 42-acre site off U.S. 27 would have an ambulatory care center and a medical office building. Eventually it might also include an assisted living center and even a helipad for an air ambulance, said property owner Dallas Murphy of Lexington.

In addition, Royal Manor Healthcare Facility, an 83-bed Nicholasville nursing home, has expressed interest in relocating from Sparks Avenue to the Murphy property, according to a letter from the home's administrator.

The project would continue Jessamine County's rapid growth in medical facilities -- though none is the full-service hospital county residents have sought.

The horses have been cared for at private farms in Jessamine and Garrard counties since being seized March 26 and 27. The Clagetts, who have raised Tennessee walking horses, were charged with second-degree animal cruelty, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.
On Friday afternoon, the Clagetts took possession of eight horses on Dennis King's farm about five miles southeast of Nicholasville under the watchful eye of a Jessamine County deputy sheriff. HIGH COURT RULES ON FATHERHOOD RIGHTS

The Kentucky Supreme Court has ruled that a man who fathers a child during an affair with a married woman has no legal rights to fatherhood. The vote was divided at 4-3, but the ruling upheld the presumption that a child born to a married woman living with her husband is a child of the marriage. Justice Bill Cunningham wrote in the ruling that married couples have a right to be left alone from the claims of "interloper adulterers." The court sided with a Louisville couple, Julia and Jonathan Ricketts. They had sought to block James Rhoades Jr. from trying to establish paternity of a child born during an affair with the woman.
A police news release said Lt. Bill Jones intended to use his Taser to stop a fight outside the police department, but he mistakenly drew his handgun and shot the man once in the side. Jones is on administrative leave pending a Kentucky State Police investigation, Nicholasville Police Chief Barry Waldrop said.
MacClaren said he and Amanda McCarty had expected trouble, and they arranged for Michael McCarty to say goodbye to his son at the police department.
