"Mind Matters' free health fair
The University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, UK Health Care Clinical Research Development and Operations Center and the Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will sponsor Mind Matters: The Science and Care Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at the Second Presbyterian Church, Main and Ransom Streets.
The free fair will feature memory screenings, free lunches, and door prizes, as well as opportunities to learn about normal healthy brain aging, respecting and interacting with a person who has Alzheimer's disease, and identifying community resources. Contact Roberta Davis at (859) 323-6316.
$3 rabies clinic at the fire station
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department's annual rabies vaccination clinic will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Third Street Fire Station, 219 East Third Street. Vaccinations will cost $3. All cats must be in carriers, and all dogs must be on leashes. Call the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department's Division of Environmental Health at (859) 231-9791.
Arthritis walk at Keeneland
The Arthritis Walk will be held May 10 at Keeneland. The event is a 5K walk with a one-mile option. Walk begins at 10 a.m. Day-of-walk registration begins at 9 a.m. at Keeneland or register online before May 8 as a team or individual at www.arthirtis.org. Call (859) 420-9328.
Vintage Dance Society event
The Lexington Vintage Dance Society will hold a Mostly Waltz Social Dance from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at ArtsPlace, 161 North Mill Street, featuring live music by Black Coffee. Take part in a pre-dance workshop in schottische at 7 p.m. Dress is casual; all skill levels are welcome. Cost is $6 per person or $3 for full-time students. Classes help you be a safer sitter
Boys and girls ages 11 to 13 are invited to attend one of several summer Safe Sitter classes sponsored by the Central Baptist Hospital Community Education Department. Participants will learn about accident and behavior problem prevention and management, care of a choking child and other important skills for baby sitters. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 5, 10, 23, and July 8, 16 in the hospital's Education Center, located at 1740 Nicholasville Road, Building E, on the lower level. Cost is $60. Snakes, lizards, alligator and more
Get close to live reptiles at the Living Arts and Science Center, 362 North Martin Luther King Boulevard, at Discovery Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Meet a 60-pound African spur thigh tortoise, a two-foot alligator, snakes, lizards and more. A donation of $2 for adults and children ages 12 and older and $1 for children ages 5 to 11 is requested. Workshop on cancer survivorship
Central Baptist Hospital's Cancer Survivorship Program will offer a free workshop on Personal Growth and Volunteering from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 12 at the Cancer Care Center Conference Room, 1720 Nicholasville Road Building E, Suite 703. YMCA programs get babies involved
The High Street YMCA is offering ”Stroller Power,“ a program for parents and their babies. The one-hour class incorporates power walking with babies in strollers as well as mommy/daddy-and-baby exercises and stretching. The classes will meet at the High Street YMCA lobby, but will be mobile, taking babies on a power stroll through Woodland Park and other routes to be determined before returning to the Y for some toning and stretching exercises.
The class will be held 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning May 6 and continuing through May 29. Babies should be at least six weeks to participate in this class. There is a limit of one parent per child. Cost for the 4-week session is $20 for YMCA members and $40 for others. Call (859) 254-9622.
The Beaumont Centre Family YMCA will offer ”Baby Strides,“ a class for parents and babies. Classes will be held 4 to 4:40 p.m. on Tuesdays, May 6 through May 27 at the Beaumont Centre YMCA, 3251 Beaumont Centre Circle. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for program participants. Johnson Elementary closing
Johnson Elementary School will close its doors to students, families, and the community at the end of the school year. There will be a celebration of the history and contributions of Johnson at 3 p.m. May 18. Former students, staff members, or community partners with photos and/or other forms of memorabilia can submit them to the school to be used during the celebration. Linlee Elementary seeks oldest grad
A celebration of the history of Linlee Elementary School will be held for former students or staff members of Greendale High School or Linlee Elementary School. We are looking for the oldest living graduate, staff member and/or memorabilia such as yearbooks, shirts, pictures, journals etc. to display in an archives room. Closing ceremonies will be from 3 to 5 p.m. May 18. The event will include a quilt auction, commemorative cookbook sale, speakers and food.
Dinner and an evening performance of the chorus, band and orchestra and a performance by fifth-graders will be from 5 to 7 p.m. May 29. The cost is $5. Participants can decorate their table, bring dinner or purchase dinner from the school for $8 per box.
