A fire in a dormitory room on the sixth floor of Commonwealth Hall at Eastern Kentucky University caused students to evacuate the building a little after 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Smoke detectors set off sprinklers that immediately extinguished the fire, said university spokesman Marc Whitt. There were no injuries.

The attorney for a Lexington woman accused of dumping her newborn child in the trash waived a preliminary hearing Thursday, and the case will go to a grand jury. Tonya Nicole Brown, 25, has been charged with murder. State police allege that on April 6, Brown placed her newborn daughter in a plastic bag and put her in a trash bin near a gas station in Shelbyville. A Berea woman was killed Sunday morning in a fire at her home at 316 Prospect Street. Berea firefighters found the woman after entering through a second-floor window. The stairway to the second floor was burned. The fire department and the state fire marshal's office said the cause of fire was an electrical short. The fire department did not release the woman's identity.

Eastern Kentucky University officials will propose enacting an 8 percent tuition increase for the 2008-09 academic year. EKU President Doug Whitlock outlined the plan Wednesday at a student forum on EKU's campus. He will present the tuition proposal at Tuesday's Board of Regents meeting.
