The sarin nerve agent that leaked at the Blue Grass Army Depot on Friday should have been destroyed two months ago, under a plan approved in January.

But the agency responsible for neutralizing the agent has not even started constructing the facility for the destruction.

In January, officials approved a plan that called for the 157 gallons of GB, or sarin, stored at the depot to be drained, neutralized and removed from the facility by May.

But two months after the initial disposal deadline, the sarin is still kept in ton containers at the depot that are still leaking.

Friends and acquaintances of David W. Jacobs are still trying to make sense of the strange and unexpected death of the longtime Clark County coroner.

Jacobs' body was found in a Richmond motel room on July 4, a week after he disappeared from his Winchester home and 17 days after he was arrested in Lexington's Jacobson Park on a charge indecent exposure.

Authorities said Jacobs apparently took his own life at the Best Western motel, using prescription medications. Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison's office is awaiting results from toxicology tests, but Cornelison said he doesn't expect that the results will alter the original conclusion that Jacobs committed suicide.

.It's a very tragic ending to a very sad story,. said Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue, whose office had been seeking Jacobs since he was reported missing June 27.

Army officials confirmed Friday that sarin nerve agent is leaking from a container at the Blue Grass Army Depot.

A mobile laboratory conducting a routine check within one of the chemical agent storage igloos tested positive for the nerve agent GB (sarin). The leak was in the same igloo that sprang a leak last August, the Army said in a press release.

.It may be the same leak reopening, it's a high possibility,. said depot public affairs officer Richard Sloan.

The igloo, which is a 90-foot-long concrete bunker covered in dirt, contains three GB ton containers and several secondary waste drums. The igloo has been continuously filtered and monitored daily since the leak was identified and sealed in August, and officials stressed that no chemical agents have escaped the containment igloo.

Hearing set on release of psychiatric records

Attorneys for a former University of Louisville student charged with killing her two children say her psychiatric records should not have been made public. Jefferson County assistant public defender Mike Lemke says psychiatric reports for Gail Lynn Coontz were supposed to be under seal, but were released to The Courier-Journal on Monday. On Tuesday, Jefferson Circuit Judge Mary Shaw set a hearing for July 17 to determine why the records were released. Coontz showed up with a gun at the University of Louisville health services counseling center on March 27. The children were found dead in their home. Coontz has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, terroristic threatening and tampering with evidence.
An attorney for one of three men facing criminal charges in connection with alleged hazing at an Eastern Kentucky University fraternity chapter said the charges are .selective and arbitrary. because other fraternity members have been implicated but not charged.

In a letter given to the Herald-Leader on Tuesday, a fraternity regional director has recommended that nine fraternity members (three from EKU and six from the University of Kentucky) be expelled or suspended from the fraternity.

EKU students Thomas Barnes, 21, and Gabriel M. McLaren, 22, and alumnus Alonzo C. McGill, 32, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to fourth-degree assault charges in the beating of EKU student Brent Whiteside, 23, who was hospitalized March 8 after he sought membership into Kappa Alpha Psi.

Police say the three men struck Whiteside with their fists, a paddle and a cane, causing kidney failure. He spent several days in Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.

Big Brown Betty runs on used fryer grease, which Turner, 32, collects free from various restaurants.
Mother and daughter killed in crash

A mother and daughter died Monday in a two-vehicle crash that sent another woman to a Lexington hospital. Nancy Gersch, 71, and Holly Gersch, 39, both of Versailles, were pronounced dead at the scene on U.S. 68, said Jessamine County Deputy Sheriff Allen .Doodle. Peel. The Gersches were in a 2002 Ford station wagon that was struck by a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Sherry Harrison, 41, of Nicholasville, Peel said. Harrison lost control of her vehicle and struck the other vehicle, which ran off the road and overturned, he said. Harrison was in fair condition at University of Kentucky Hospital. The crash happened at 10:45 a.m. just north of the Ky. 169 intersection. Blackburn and Ward Funeral Home in Versailles is handling funeral arrangements, which were incomplete Monday.
