T-shirt design contest just for kids

The Kentucky Horse Council announces a T-shirt design contest open to all Kentucky youth ages 18 and younger. The contest is designed to promote and increase awareness of the council and its new youth membership.

The winner of the contest will receive an iPod Shuffle. The winning design will be featured on the back of all youth T-shirts for 2008. All KHC youth members will receive the shirts. Entries must be received by Thursday. Submissions should be drawn on an 8- by 10-inch sheet of paper using no more than two colors. They can be mailed to the KHC office, 1500 Bull Lea Road, Suite 214C, Lexington, Ky. 40511, postmarked on or before Thursday, or submitted online. Miracle League needs volunteers

The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League needs more volunteers for spring league play at Shillito Park. The league offers softball to ­special needs players, and pairs a volunteer ”buddy“ with each player. This spring, the league will have a minimum of 80 players. Lioness Club garage sale held May 9-10

The Lexington Lioness Club will hold its ”garage sale extravaganza“ fund-raising event May 9 from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. and May 10 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Follow the signs at Masterson Station Park on Leestown Road. Free flower seeds will be given to the first 100 buyers.

Lexmark honors top volunteer

Lexmark International, Inc. announced the recipient of its Volunteer of the Year Award, which annually recognizes a Lexmark employee for commitment to outstanding volunteer service.

Jessica Mayes, materials engineer, is the winner for 2007.

Mayes received the award based on her extensive volunteer work and was nominated specifically for her work with the Paris Animal Welfare Society. As part of the award, Lexmark has donated $5,000 to P.A.W.S. on Mayes' behalf.
