SMALL PLANE HITS FENCE; PILOT HURT

A small plane crashed in a Louisville neighborhood Wednesday, 2 miles from the airport near Interstate 64 where it had taken off. Louisville Fire Chief Greg Frederick said the plane took off from Bowman Field and lost power at about 9:40 a.m. The pilot radioed the airport, which then notified emergency officials, Frederick said. A few minutes later, emergency officials received a 911 call directing them to the neighborhood where the plane crashed, Frederick said. The plane clipped several trees, flipped over and landed upside down on a fence between two back yards, Frederick said. No one on the ground was hurt and no houses or power lines were hit, Frederick said. Frederick said the only person in the plane was the pilot, who was injured and taken to a hospital. Frederick did not release the name of the pilot.

BIG FOUR BRIDGE ON OHIO BURNS

Louisville firefighters were at the scene of a blaze on the Big Four Bridge on the Ohio River Thursday. Fire officials and Waterfront Development Corp. officials told The Courier-Journal about 2 p.m. that they didn't know the extent of the fire, which broke out shortly after noon. The Coast Guard shut down river traffic for about a mile around the bridge. Lt. Tina Owen said there was debris falling off the aging bridge, and watercraft were being kept away. The railroad bridge is being turned into a pedestrian walkway connecting Louisville and southern Indiana. The span was completed in 1895 and abandoned in 1969.

MASSEY CITED ON SAFETY ISSUES

Coal operator Massey Energy Co. has been cited for safety violations that federal investigators say contributed to the death of a West Virginia miner late last year. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration found the violations while investigating a Dec. 4 accident at an underground Massey mine in Kanawha County. Miner David Neal, 57, fell 39 feet when a conveyer belt he was repairing started unexpectedly. Neal died 10 days later. MSHA noted a series of problems at the mine in a report released Wednesday. Among other things, MSHA cited Massey's Mammoth Coal Co. because the belt had inadequate startup alarms, including one that wasn't working, according to the report.
