Newberry names new chair to mortgage commission

Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry named a new person Friday to chair his Commission on Mortgage Lending Practices, which will examine concerns that the city's black borrowers are steered to higher-cost loans.

The new chairwoman will be Judy "J.J." Jackson, the University of Kentucky's vice president of institutional diversity. The original chairman, DeAndre McGinnis Mitchell, resigned last month after the Herald-Leader reported that he inflated his resume, such as claiming credit for a college degree that he did not earn.

Jackson is a longtime educator and college administrator with a doctorate in education from Harvard, which Harvard confirmed Friday.
