Give peace a chance at Saturday fair


Peace is the theme of Lexington's Peace and Global Citizenship Fair on Saturday at Bluegrass Community and Technical College's Cooper Campus, 470 Cooper Drive. The fair, from noon to 8 p.m., will offer live music, dance, storytelling, puppet shows and food. It coincides with World Fair Trade Day and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Lost Dog, Raspberry Jam, Jen Rose and the Kentucky Bootleggers are among the nine musical acts performing. Terrapin Hill Farm and Slow Food Bluegrass will provide local foods on dinnerware that is an ecologically sound alternative to Styrofoam.

Raffle prize: $5,000

Tickets are on sale for Catholic Social Service ­Bureau's Reverse Raffle. Tickets are $150 each and include admission for two to La Fête du Mai, hosted by Pearse and Deidre Lyons at the ­Lyons' Den on Alltech Farm in Nicholasville from 4 to 7 p.m. June 8. The event will include silent auction tables, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, The raffle's grand prize winner will receive $5,000. Proceeds will support the bureau's programs, including affordable mental health counseling, pregnancy and adoption services, and emergency financial assistance. Mother to Mother spring luncheon

Mother to Mother of Lexington Inc. will have its annual spring luncheon from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Woodland Christian Church. The guest speaker will be Fayette Circuit Judge Pamela Goodwine. YMCA job fair

The Beaumont Centre Family YMCA, 3251 Beaumont Centre Circle, is hosting a summer job fair from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday,. Job opportunities include lifeguards, member services, swim instructors, daycare, sports instructors, referees and more. Applicants must be at least 16 and have reliable transportation. Lifeguards must be certified; certification courses are available through the YMCA. "Carmen' on her toes

5K Run for Glory

Serenity Christian Bookstore is hosting Run for Glory, a 5K run/walk at 9 a.m. Saturday at Jacobson Park, Shelter No. 6. Plant exchange

The Gainesway Neighborhood Association will hold its first plant exchange from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the open area by the creek on Willowood Drive near Greentree Road. In case of rain, it will be in the basement of Tatesbrook Baptist Church, 3724 Appian Way. The Centre Parkway and Tatesbrook Neighborhood Associations have been invited to participate as well. Y summer programs

Registration for most YMCA of Central Kentucky summer programs begins Monday. Programs include swim lessons, youth sports, group exercise classes, adult sports leagues, martial arts, guitar lessons, drama and visual arts classes, and much more.

Summer fun classes

The Living Arts and Science Center is taking registrations for its summer programs.

Classes begin June 2 and will include such topics as cartooning, animation, clowning, robot building, architecture, photography, painting, chocolate sculpture, songwriting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, experimental art, bookbinding, fiber art and printmaking. All classes are taught by professional artists and arts educators.

Classes for children in kindergarten through 12th grade are offered from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students may select one or two classes or bring their lunch and stay the whole day. Some multiweek teen and adult classes are available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in June, July and August.

Weekly classes cost $25 to $85. Join the LASC as an individual or family member to receive a $10 discount on each class. Some scholarships are available for middle and high school students. Registrations can be taken by phone or fax with a credit card. Alzheimer's fair

The University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, UK HealthCare Clinical Research Development and Operations Center and Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will sponsor Mind Matters: The Science and Care Health Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17 at Second Presbyterian Church, 460 East Main Street. There will be free memory screenings, free lunch and door prizes; and opportunities to learn about normal healthy brain aging, respecting and interacting with a person who has Alzheimer's disease, and identifying community resources. Douglass alum to hold dance

Douglass School Alumni Association is having a barn dance from 9 p.m. to midnight May 23 at the National Guard Armory, Airport Road and Parkers Mill Road.
