$4,700 reward for tips in killings of bats

HERALD-LEADER STAFF REPORT

OLIVE HILL — A $4,700 reward is being offered for information on the killers of more than 100 endangered bats at Carter Caves State Park in late October. Vandals smashed the bats with rocks and knocked several into a stream, where they drowned.

The first occurrence was between Oct. 21 and 24; the second was the night of Oct. 26. Fewer than 500,000 of the federally endangered Indiana bats are left in the world. About 62,000 are thought to live in Kentucky.

Several wildlife conservation organizations and other groups pooled money for the reward. Anyone with information about the bat deaths may contact special agent Bob Snow of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (502) 582-5989, Ext. 29.
