Kentucky has too many babies born early, born too small or born to teen mothers, according to a report released Wednesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
Those factors make it harder for Kentucky babies to succeed.
”Poor birth outcomes are linked to higher health care costs, worse educational outcomes and more infant deaths,“ said Terry Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates, which released the report.
The report shows that 9.1 percent of Kentucky babies have low birth weights, 15 percent are born before 37 weeks of gestation, making them preterm, and 12 percent are born to teenage mothers.
