Ham nets $200,000 at Kentucky State Fair

- jwarren@herald-leader.com

A blue-ribbon country ham at the Kentucky State Fair brought $200,000 Thursday morning, and that ain’t hay.

Republic Bank and Trust Co. put in the winning bid for the ham at the annual Kentucky Country Ham Breakfast and Auction, sponsored by the Kentucky Farm Bureau.

The ham, which weighed 18.32 pounds, was produced by Broadbent’s B&B Foods. The total amount of the winning bid will go to charity.

The $200,000 bid was the fourth-highest in the 44-year history of the ham auction. The record, a $500,000 bid by First Southern National Bank of Stanford, was submitted for another Broadbent’s B&B ham in 2006.
