Cheapside street in Lexington will be closed to vehicle traffic until Nov. 1.
On Thursday, the Urban County Council approved the closure of Cheapside, a one-way, one-block street between West Short and West Main streets, on the west side of the old Fayette County Courthouse.
The street closure was done at the request of merchants and property owners who want to create a more pedestrian-friendly area during the summer and fall around the old courthouse.
Whether the street will be temporarily closed each year between April 15 and Nov. 1 will be evaluated after this year’s trial period is completed.
A decision will be made Monday about the effective date of Cheapside’s closure, said Charlie Boland, the city’s senior administrative officer. Temporary posts at each end of the block will prevent vehicle traffic.
