Authorities identify woman killed in I-64 crash

A Bath County woman died Monday after her car was struck from behind as she was slowing on Interstate 64 near the Fayette-Clark County line, officials say.

Malverie Perkins, 53, of Owingsville, was driving a small passenger car about 7:30 p.m. on I-64. She slowed down, possibly because of road conditions, and her vehicle was knocked into a center barrier wall, Lexington police said.

It appeared she was getting out of her car or seated with the door open when the car was hit again, police said.

Perkins was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital where she later died from multiple injuries, the Fayette County coroner's office said.

On Monday, Lexington police Lt. Edward Hart said there may have been eight cars involved in the wreck.

Police suspect the wreck was caused by inattention by the driver who hit Perkins.
