A 33-year-old Louisville climber was rescued Saturday after he survived a 180-foot fall in the Red River Gorge near Frenchburg around 3:30 p.m.
The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to University of Kentucky Hospital apparently with broken legs after an eight-hour rescue operation.
Menifee County Rescue Captain Darrell Rogers said Sunday that 30-35 people took part in the rescue on Frog's Head Rock near Indian Staircase. Rogers said the man, who was with three other climbers, was rappelling down the cliff and apparently lost his grip at the top and fell straight down 180 feet onto rocks below.
Rogers said the rescue was complicated by heavy rain and by the height. "This is about the highest cliff that I've been on," Rogers said Sunday.
The team raised the man on a backboard and rescue basket back to the top of the cliff and then took him out by trail to an ambulance.
Saturday's rescue came two months after two 18-year-old climbers were killed when they fell 50-60 feet near Natural Bridge State Park in the gorge in Wolfe County when a frayed webbing strap broke.
