closeA Cynthiana man died in a one-car accident early Sunday just three months after returning from serving with his Army National Guard unit in Afghanistan.
Daniel Westfall, 24, was driving north on U.S. 27 about 4 miles outside of Cynthiana about 3:30 a.m. when he lost control, sending his 2006 Kia tumbling off the road.
Harrison County Sheriff Deputy Steve McCauley, who investigated the crash, said speed appeared to be a factor. No alcohol was involved, and Westfall was wearing his seat belt.
McCauley said Westfall's car dropped off the right side of the road around a turn, then Westfall must have overcorrected before skidding off the right shoulder.
The car "cart wheeled" end-over-end three or four times, traveling about a quarter of a mile before coming to rest in a ditch, he said.
Westfall served in the engineering battalion of the Army National Guard, which returned from Afghanistan earlier this spring. The city of Cynthiana honored Westfall and the rest of the battalion in a "Freedom Salute" parade May 16.
"It's a sad end," McCauley said. "This fine young man had spent nine months overseas in Afghanistan serving his country and then, three months later, gets killed in a car accident. It's pretty devastating to this community."
