closeA Georgetown man was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison for murder and robbery charges in the 2006 slaying of a Lawrenceburg man.
Kenneth D. North, 40, pleaded guilty in May to robbing Anthony Gene Crady, hitting him on the head and dumping him into the Kentucky River. Investigators said North was the last person seen with Crady. The two left a gay bar together.
Crady, 48, who had been staying in Lexington, was reported missing on May 8, 2006. A few days after he disappeared, Crady's BMW convertible was found burned in a remote area of western Laurel County.
His body was found in the river near the Fayette-Madison County line on May 13, 2006.
North was arrested two days after Crady's body was identified through fingerprint analysis.
Before he was sentenced, North apologized to Crady's family.
North's attorneys, Robert Friedman and Hubert West, said that North's abusive childhood and the early death of his mother should be taken into account.
North was arrested in 1997 and sentenced to serve eight years for robbery.
During sentencing Friday, North's attorneys said that the 1997 arrest indicated nothing more than an emotionally immature kid, and reflected North's unstable childhood.
Fayette Circuit Judge Thomas L. Clark sentenced North to 20 years on the murder charge and 10 years on a charge of second-degree robbery. He ordered that North serve the sentences consecutively.
North's attorneys asked Clark to allow the sentences to be served concurrently, but Clark denied their request.
