Two die in Madison County crash

- kward1@herald-leader.com

Two women died in a crash with a semi truck in Madison County late Friday.

Martha A. Collins, 28, of Salyersville was driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup north on Ky. 627 when she tried to pass another vehicle in a no passing zone at about 8:08 p.m., state police said. The pickup collided head-on with a southbound semi driven by Michael R. Giles, 56, of Lawrenceburg.

Martha S. Gibson, a passenger in Collins' vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Collins was taken to Pattie A. Clay Hospital in Richmond, where she was later pronounced dead. Neither woman was wearing a seat belt.

A small child in the pickup was in a child restraint and was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital. State police said the child appeared uninjured.

Giles was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
