On the evening that the Rev. Louis Coleman died, burglars broke into his office.

The break-in at Louisville's Justice Resource Center, 1601 Maple Street, occurred sometime before 10 p.m. Saturday, Louisville police said.

“The burglar got guns out of the cabinet and possibly stole some weapons,” police spokesman Phil Russell said.

Coleman, a prominent civil rights activist, kept guns in his office because he ran a gun buyback program. The program gives residents a reward in exchange for weapons, in an effort to reduce street violence.

Coleman, 64, died Saturday. Members of Louisville's Justice Resource Center, which Coleman led, said he suffered from several seizures on Saturday and was brought to Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville for treatment before he died.
