TIME ZONE
Lexington and Central Kentucky are in the Eastern Time Zone and observe daylight-saving time, which begins in early March and ends in early November. The western half of Kentucky is in the Central Time Zone; the border runs roughly from just west of Louisville southeast to the Lake Cumberland area.

Kentucky experiences four distinct seasons. Here are the average temperature and precipitation for Lexington, according to the University of Kentucky Agricultural Weather Center:

TRANSPORTATION
Car rental: To rent a car, visit Blue Grass Airport (4000 Terminal Drive, off Man o' War Boulevard and Versailles Road), where most major rental agencies have a desk: Avis (1-800-230-4898), Budget (1-800-527-0700), Enterprise (1-800-261-7331), Hertz (1-800-654-3131) and National (1-800-227-7368).
Bus: Lexington's local bus service is called LexTran ((859) 253-4636). Fare, which includes transfers, is $1 for adults, 50 cents for seniors and others; children younger than 6 ride free with an adult. Main line service is available 5:30 a.m.-11:20 p.m.
Taxis: It can be difficult to hail a cab from the street. It's often better to call for a taxi. Here are some companies operating in Lexington: 24/7 Taxi, (859) 233-2227; American Taxi, (859) 318-8294; Wildcat Taxi, (859) 225-2227; and Yellow Cab, (859) 231-8294. Outside Lexington, taxis are hard to come by.
Air: The regional Blue Grass Airport (Code: LEX; (859) 425-3114; 4000 Terminal Drive, near Man o' War Boulevard and Versailles Road) is serviced by six major airlines (American Eagle, Continental Express, Delta, Northwest Airlink, United Express and U.S. Airways). There are 13 non-stop destinations and more than 85 flights daily, most of which connect to a hub.
Within a little over an hour's drive are the Louisville International Airport (Code: SDF; (502) 367-4636; at the junction of interstates 65 and 264) and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (Code: CVG; (859) 767-3151; off Interstate 275 West in Northern Kentucky).
Train: No passenger rail lines serve Lexington. Amtrak (1-800-USA-RAIL) offers service through northern and far Western Kentucky. The "Cardinal and Hoosier State" line from New York to Chicago passes through Ashland, Portsmouth-South Shore, Maysville and Cincinnati. The City of New Orleans line from Chicago to New Orleans passes through Fulton, on the western tip of Kentucky.
Bus: Greyhound (1-800-231-2222) has bus stations at 477 West New Circle Road in Lexington; and 301 West Jefferson Street in Berea, among other cities in the state.

TELEPHONE
Lexington-Fayette County and most of its neighboring counties are in the 859 area code. Georgetown and Frankfort are in the 502 area code. Eastern Kentucky is in 606, and Western Kentucky is in 270. From Lexington, there is no extra charge to call Nicholasville, Wilmore, Versailles and Georgetown.
LIBRARIES
Each of Kentucky's 120 counties has its own library system. The largest in Central Kentucky is the Lexington Public Library, which operates several branches throughout the county. The main location is at 140 East Main Street, Lexington.
