BOWLING GREEN — The weather-delayed Leachman KHSAA Girls' State Golf Tournament at Bowling Green Country Club isn't over.

Just the race for first place.

Emma Talley, a 14-year-old freshman from Caldwell County, completed a tournament- and course-record 65 Wednesday, 7-under par. Through 15 holes of the second and final round, she dropped her overall score to 10-under.

North Hardin's Lydia Gumm is 1-under par — nine shots back.

"It makes me feel better about (Thursday) because if I was up by one or two ... that would be bad," Talley said. "It's just nice to have a nine-shot lead and, hopefully, I can keep it. You never know what's going to happen."

Barring a three-hole implosion, the 36-hole tournament record of 139 will fall.

The team race is a bit tighter. Glasgow leads defending champion West Jessamine by 12 strokes. Scott County is third, three behind West Jessamine.

Play was delayed more than three hours because of lightning, extending Tuesday's first round to Wednesday. Rain delayed Wednesday's re-start another hour, until 8:45 a.m. CDT. The final round didn't begin until Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. CDT, with the final threesome off at 3:18.

Competition is scheduled to resume Thursday at 7:45 a.m. CDT.

West Jessamine Coach Jen Brown said it was a long day for her Colts, who arrived at the course at 6 a.m. and spent about 121/2 hours on site. She said that, with a night to rest, the champs can rally.

"They can do it. They can regroup," she said. "They all have the ability to do it. I've watched them come out here and birdie-birdie-par-par, so we'll see."

Betsie Johnson leads West at 5-over par through 27 holes. Teammate and regional champion Emily Haas is at 13-over through 30 holes.

Glasgow won the state title four years in a row, 1997-2000.

Coach Mike Harris isn't ready to claim No. 5 just yet.

"We've got to come back (Thursday) and take care of business in the morning," he said. "Because there's still not a winner as far as I'm concerned. West Jessamine is still the state champion until somebody knocks them off."

Kristen Wilkinson leads the Scotties at 10-over through 27 holes. Blair Dennison is 15-over through 30.

Scott County's Megan Wilshire is 4-over through 27; Liz Gumm is 21-over through 30.

"We had a bad sequence as a team on 7, 8 and 9," Cardinals Coach Jason Carpenter said. "So we gave up a lot of shots. We were second on the leader board for a short time. So (Thursday's goal:), not give up the high numbers."

Through 18 holes, Glasgow led West Jessamine, 330-332, with Scott County at 339.

West Jessamine's Betsie Johnson and Sacred Heart's Lindsay Gahm were tied for second at 72.

The 18-hole cuts were 368 for the top 11 teams and 86 for the top 20 individuals.

Although in her first year of high school, Talley is playing in her fifth state tourney. She placed 27th as a fifth-grader, fifth as a sixth-grader and third the last two years.

She played her first nine holes in 5-under 31, highlighted by an eagle-3 on No. 2. — sinking a flop shot of about 20 yards from just beyond the fringe.

"It was luck," she said. "I'll take it."
