A Central Kentucky man charged with abducting his 15-month-old baby in July escaped Thursday from the Montgomery County jail, Kentucky State Police said.
Robin Clay Maple of Camargo was accused of abducting the baby, Billy Maple, before engaging in a standoff with police for about seven hours. Police said Maple also left the baby, who was injured, in a wrecked vehicle after he crashed the car in Menifee County.
State police Trooper Ralph Lockard said Friday that police were following several leads in their search for Maple. Lockard did not have details about how Maple escaped the jail, saying state police investigators took over the case Thursday evening from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
No one was available to comment Friday morning at the sheriff's office.
In July, Lockard said there was an altercation between Maple and the baby's mother in Mount Sterling, after which Maple took his son and drove off. Later, Maple crawled from underneath his wrecked vehicle after it rolled over, leaving the baby underneath the car with serious injuries.
Later that day, police received a tip that Maple was at his father's house in Montgomery County. When police found Maple, he refused to leave the house.
Maple has been charged with kidnapping, burglary, first-degree assault, first-degree wanton endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.
