Kyle Singler showed up from the start this time, scoring 15 points and leading Duke over surprising Michigan 71-56 in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic Friday.
Nolan Smith added 16 points and Gerald Henderson had 12 for the Blue Devils, who won their four games in the 2K Sports Classic by an average of 28.5 points. Duke has won seven straight in-season tournament games after sweeping through the Maui Invitational last season.
Manny Harris scored 25 points to lead Michigan (3-1), which will get another crack at the Blue Devils (5-0) when they visit Ann Arbor on Dec. 6. DeShawn Sims added 10 points off the bench.
No. 1 North Carolina 84, UC Santa Barbara 67: Ty Lawson led six players in double figures with 19 points, including Tyler Hansbrough, who had 13 in his season debut for the Tar Heels.
Hansbrough missed the first two games for Carolina (3-0) because of a stress reaction in his right shin. Last season's national player of the year had been held out of practice and exhibition games since the injury was diagnosed in October.
He was in the starting lineup for the Tar Heels' first road game of season, a sellout in the 6,000-seat Thunderdome.
James Nunnally scored a career-high 19 points off the bench for the Gauchos (1-2).
No. 2 Connecticut 89, La Salle 81: Kemba Walker scored 23 points, and Jeff Adrien added 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Huskies to a hard-fought victory in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The Huskies (3-0) trailed in the early minutes, but they were up 46-40 at halftime behind the leadership of guard A.J. Price. They never trailed in the second half, leading by as many as 10 points.
Rodney Green had a game-high 25 points for La Salle (1-2). Ruben Guillandeaux and Yves Mekongo Mbala each had 13 points.
No. 4 UCLA 77, Southern Illinois 60: Alfred Aboya scored 22 points and Darren Collison had 17, helping the Bruins rebound from a disheartening loss to beat Southern Illinois in the consolation game of the 2K Sports Classic.
The Bruins (3-1) struggled in a semifinal loss to Michigan, turning the ball over 17 times and showing very little patience against the Wolverines' zone defense.
They had their own problems with Southern Illinois, a team known for its gritty defense, before a 20-2 run covering more than six minutes late in the game made it much more comfortable.
Freshman guard Kevin Dillard scored 14 for the Salukis (2-2).
No. 14 Tennessee 76, Middle Tennessee 66: Tyler Smith scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the visiting Volunteers.
Bobby Maze added 12 points for the Vols (3-0) while J.P. Prince and Scotty Hopson, out of University Heights, had 10 each.
Down by six points, Middle opened the second half with a 6-0 run to tie the score at 38 with 17:30 left on a long jumper by Nigel Johnson. Tennessee responded with a 9-0 run.
Demetrius Green from Lexington Catholic led the Blue Raiders with 17 points.
National women
No. 2 Oklahoma 70, No. 18 Arizona State 57: Courtney Paris had 20 rebounds and 19 points for the 100th double-double of her career and set Oklahoma's scoring record in the semifinals of the Women's Preseason NIT.
Arizona State (2-1) held Paris without a shot or a point for the first 15 minutes and 50 seconds. Still, the 6-foot-4, pre-season All-America center extended her double-double streak to 95 games, extending her NCAA record.
No. 5 Tennessee 66, Chattanooga 63: Glory Johnson scored 19 points, Vicki Baugh made a tiebreaking free throw with 53.7 seconds remaining and the Lady Vols avoided a major upset.

Western Kentucky 72, George Washington 64: Kenzie Rich led the host Toppers with 22 points, seven assists, five rebounds, four steals and four three-pointers. Arnika Brown added 11 points and nine rebounds.
