Hay auction to provide marketplace for local farmers

A hay auction for Kentucky farmers will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the Madison County Fairgrounds in Richmond.

Consecutive summer droughts have caused recent hay shortages for many farmers in the region.

"It's been so hard for people to find hay, so we tried to create a marketplace for them," said Chuck Givens, a member of the Madison County Fair Board.

Local farmers are welcome to both buy and sell their hay at the auction.

Givens said that many farmers don't advertise their hay, so the auction will provide a chance for them to barter with other local farmers.

All hay will be tested by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.
