Local 'Jeopardy!' contestant

Published: January 27, 2009

If you watched Jeopardy! Monday night, you might have seen a familiar face: Melinda Hautala, business officer at the Singletary Center for the Arts, was a contestant.

Some viewers were unable to watch Hautala's appearance since Jeopardy! was shown on the digital-only CWKYT network instead of WKYT.

WKYT News Director Robert Thomas said all the local news stations had long planned to simultaneously run a special on the federally mandated switch to digital broadcast television. He said the station only recently learned that a Lexington contestant would be on the show.

Hautala, 39, finished third with $9,199 — only one dollar behind five-time champion Matt Kohlstedt.

"As a whole family, we used to watch Jeopardy! since I was a kid, so just to be there with Alex Trebek and everything, it was just really fun," she said.
