Surgery on former University of Kentucky football coach Hal Mumme went well, a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday afternoon.

Mumme, 56, had surgery at UK Hospital to remove his prostate because of cancer.

"The surgery went well, and I expect Mr. Mumme will be back to normal activities in two weeks," said Dr. Stephen Strup, who performed the surgery.

Mumme, who left UK after the 2000 season amid a recruiting scandal that ended with the football program being placed on probation, returned to Kentucky for the surgery. Until December, when he was fired, Mumme was head coach at New Mexico State.

Mumme was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January. Doctors have said that his problems were diagnosed early and that his prognosis is good.
