Farmers may get help with debris, fences

Published: February 7, 2009

Kentucky farmers who suffered damage in the ice storm might be eligible for as much as $200,000 a person in cost-share assistance for removing debris and rebuilding fences under a federal program.

The assistance, under the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Emergency Conservation Program, does not cover ornamental fences.

Requests must be made at local Farm Service Agency centers from Feb. 10 to April 13, and requests related to repairs that have already begun must be made by Feb. 25. In many cases, a request should be filed and an FSA inspection done before most repairs, but emergency repairs may be covered as long as they meet all other criteria, including environmental regulations.

For more information, contact area FSA offices, or the state FSA office at (859) 224-7601.
