A proposal to bury utility lines in future developments won backing from an Urban County Council committee Tuesday.

The Services Committee considered Councilwoman Cheryl Feigel's proposal to require buried utilities in new residential and commercial developments and highway projects.

Most developers opt to do underground utilities, but the ordinance would hold all developers to a higher standard, according to proponents. Councilman Doug Martin said the overhead utilities that will be installed with the extension of Newtown Pike were a "shame." Those utilities will be along the side of the road, according to Kentucky Utilities.

"Green space is important so the trappings of modern times don't take us over," Martin said. "We are allowing gross things to happen along our corridors. We are selling ourselves short."

The proposal will go to the full council next Tuesday. If the council approves the proposal, the plan commission will draft the change to subdivision regulations.
