HYDEN — Leslie County schools are closed for the rest of the week because heavy rain Wednesday damaged 15 bus routes, Assistant Superintendent Calvin Crawford said.

School buildings were not damaged, but U.S. 421 between Harlan and Hyden was washed out, Crawford said, and some families are without water and power.

The rain caused numerous mud slides and collapses of county roads, Crawford said.

A temporary bridge on U.S. 421 at Stinnett, 5 miles south of Hyden, allowed the road to reopen at 5 p.m. Thursday.
