Rockcastle school closes because of flu

A Rockcastle County elementary school will be closed for the rest of the week because a number of students have flu-like symptoms.

Roundstone Elementary called school off for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Principal Jim Ward said 75 students were absent Tuesday and five went home early because of illness. Enrollment is 294.

While there have been no confirmed cases of the swine flu, Ward said many students have flu symptoms and some have been diagnosed with other illnesses such as strep throat.

"We just wanted to make sure that we err on the side of caution," he said. "At least we can slow this thing down."

Staff will still be reporting for work this week and will spend most of Wednesday disinfecting, Ward said.
