Tubby helps push for health care reform

Tubby Smith was among NCAA basketball coaches who joined forces Tuesday on Capitol Hill to push for quick approval of health care reform.

"Now is the time to press full court," Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey told about 200 American Cancer Society activists and others, adding, "And foul a little bit."

Smith, the former Kentucky coach who now is at Minnesota, and Brey were joined by John Thompson III of Georgetown, Ed DeChellis of Penn State and Oliver Purnell of Clemson.

They are among hundreds of members of Coaches vs. Cancer, a group of college basketball coaches who have worked with the cancer society to help raise $50 million to help in the fight against cancer.

The event was a push to guarantee health coverage for all, regardless of pre-existing conditions, and require minimal or no deductibles for cancer-screening procedures.

Ex-Card at tryout camp

Former University of Louisville star Angel McCoughtry has been invited to the U.S. women's basketball training camp next week at American University in Washington, D.C.

The 22 players at the camp will be competing to be part of a national pool that will be considered for the 2010 World Championship team and the 2012 Olympics team.
