Herald-Leader Sports Columnist Mark Story has looked back at Kentucky basketball games since the 1983-84 season, when the Herald-Leader began its electronic archive, and has selected his top 25 most memorable games. No. 23: Kentucky 74, Houston 67 (Jan. 22, 1984 in Rupp Arena)
Mark Story’s comment: Sam Bowie, Melvin Turpin, Kenny Walker for Kentucky. Akeem Olajuwon (he had not yet added the ‘H’ to his first name), Michael Young and Ricky Winslow for Houston. There likely has never been a more formidable collection of athletic big men on the Rupp court in one game. UK’s bigs (Walker 20 points; 10 rebounds; Turpin 19 points, 11 rebounds; Bowie 18 rebounds) came out on top of Olajuwon (14 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks) and Co.
Excerpt: In the end, after each team had spent its athletic ability, UK proved again an old basketball adage: two 7-footers are better than one.
Playing his best game since his return from a two-year layoff, Sam Bowie grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and sent a message to NBA general managers.
"You like to say it'll help your money," Bowie said with a sly smile.
