Arkansas guard Stefan Welsh was suspended for the team's first exhibition game, and Coach John Pelphrey didn't say how long the senior would be out of the lineup. Welsh started 24 games last season.
Pelphrey did not say why Welsh is suspended. He said Welsh has worked very hard in school and in practice lately.
Welsh was not one of the three players named in a recent rape complaint. A local prosecutor decided not to file charges in that case, saying there wasn't enough evidence but agreed to let someone else review the case. Special prosecutor H.G. Foster was picked to do so Tuesday.
Minnesota star freshman suspended indefinitely
Another of Minnesota's top basketball recruits is in trouble: Freshman forward Royce White faces misdemeanor charges of theft and fifth-degree assault for allegedly shoplifting and shoving a security guard at the Mall of America.
Coach Tubby Smith announced indefinite suspensions Tuesday for White and senior guard Devron Bostick for violations of team rules he wouldn't identify. A police report cited by the Star Tribune accuses White of stealing $100 worth of merchandise from Macy's and twice pushing a security guard to the ground. White is part of a touted recruiting class that includes transfer Trevor Mbakwe, who is also out indefinitely while a felony aggravated battery charge against him goes through the legal process.
Syracuse loses to Le Moyne
Christopher Johnson scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half, including a three-pointer with 8.3 seconds remaining, and Division II Le Moyne stunned Syracuse 82-79 in an exhibition game Tuesday night. Andy Rautins had 13 points for the Orange, who led by as many as 10 early in the second half.
Louisville's final exhibition
Rick Pitino said he'll try several different combinations Wednesday when Louisville hosts Bellarmine in its final exhibition game. U of L looked sluggish at times in an 80-68 victory over Georgetown College, a game that wasn't decided until the final minutes.
The Cardinals expect a stern test from the Knights, who were ranked No. 1 in the NCAA's Division II by several news outlets. Bellarmine is coached by former Louisville assistant Scott Davenport.
Duke guard suspended
Duke guard Nolan Smith will sit out two games because he played in an unsanctioned summer league. Smith said Tuesday night that he was suspended because he played a game with professionals over the summer near his hometown of Washington, D.C.
