SANDY HOOK — Cleanup of a Friday crude oil spill in Elliott County was continuing Monday, officials said.

About 4,200 gallons of crude oil made its way from Cornerstone Minerals' Stafford Heirs No. 1 lease, an oil and gas site, to a spill prevention basin, then to a drainage pipe and an unnamed tributary of Big Caney Creek.

A half-mile of the tributary was affected. Contractors stopped the spill a quarter-mile from Big Caney, a cold water aquatic habitat stream that flow into Grayson Lake Reservoir. About 5,000 gallons of liquids and 220 tons of contaminated soil have been removed from the site. An investigation of the still is continuing.
