Herald-Leader Sports Columnist Mark Story has looked back at Kentucky basketball games since the 1983-84 season, when the Herald-Leader began its electronic archive, and has selected his top 25 most memorable games. One game will be revealed each day until Nov. 11. Check each day to see where your favorite game was ranked.
No. 1: Duke 104, Kentucky 103 (OT) (NCAA Tournament East Region Finals: March 28, 1992 in the Spectrum, Philadelphia)
Mark Story's comment: Want the recipe for an all-time classic? Take a defending national champion (Duke). Add a massive second-half rally (Kentucky). Feature two teams continually one-upping each other with one stellar clutch play after another down the stretch and into overtime.
Have an amazing Sean Woods running bank shot to give UK a one-point lead with 2.1 seconds left in the OT. Counter it with a full-court Grant Hill pass that leads to Christian Laettner’s buzzer-beater in response.
Put it together, you’ll have what many say is the greatest college basketball game ever played.
Excerpt from the original game story: With 2.1 seconds left in overtime, Sean Woods hit a leaning semi-hook over Laettner to give Kentucky a 103-102 lead.
"As lucky as my shot was," Laettner said, "his shot was incredible."
Impending jubilation turned to disbelief before the buzzer.
