Louis Gill Cobb, a fixture in downtown Lexington also known as "Shoeshine," died Wednesday from unspecified cardiac problems, according to the Fayette County Coroner's Office.

An autopsy was performed on Cobb, 43, on Thursday. The death was reported to be from natural causes, pending toxicology results.

Cobb was found unresponsive on Main Street at 11:19 a.m. He was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Cobb was a professional shoeshiner, who made his rounds around downtown Lexington, and often spoke out at city council meetings. His life was the subject of a 2006 documentary, which detailed the troubles he had overcome and his life's philosophies. Friends called him an inspirational figure.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Smith and Smith Funeral Home.
