Girl, 13, hit, killed by car in Fleming

- dhjalmarson@herald-leader.com

A 13-year-old girl was killed when she was hit by a pickup truck just before sunrise Wednesday on Ky. 32 in Elizaville in Fleming County, Kentucky State Police said Wednesday.

Amber Choate was hit about 6 a.m. while crossing the street. Amber had stayed the night at her grandmother's house and was crossing the road to return to her mother's house to get ready for school, Coroner Gary Workman said.

The driver, Dustin Hawkins, 29, of Flemingsburg, had no time to react, state police said in a press release.

The accident is under investigation.

Amber was an eighth-grader at Simons Middle School in Flemingsburg. She was an active member in the Cougars for Christ student organization, Simons principal Lesia Eldridge said.

"We want to remember Amber as an energetic young girl and an honor student," Eldridge said. "We lost a member of our family today."
