Mayor Jim Newberry kicked off his campaign for a second term Wednesday night at the Lexington Convention Center, telling supporters that Lexington is cleaner, greener, safer and works more efficiently than three years ago when he took office.

If re-elected, Newberry said, his administration would be guided by Destination 2040, a report prepared with input from thousands of residents. Newberry said he would look for new ways to generate high-paying jobs, balanced against preserving farmland and emphasizing cultural activities.

Newberry's campaign last week reported it had raised $267,079 from more than 400 contributors since June. The mayor is facing a challenge from former Mayor Teresa Isaac and political newcomer Eric Patrick Marr.
