Lexington to give H1N1 shots by appointment

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is taking appointments to get an H1N1 vaccination.

The free shots will be given by appointment only at the Public Health Clinic North Annex, 805B Newtown Circle.

To schedule an appointment, call the flu hotline at (859) 288-7529. There will be 30 shot appointments available per hour. The hotline operates from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The appointments are available to "anybody who wants one" said department spokesman Kevin Hall. Early efforts had focused on people at high-risk for catching the virus.

The department has provided 15,196 H1N1 vaccinations at four large-scale clinics and a total of about 44,000. No more large clinics are scheduled in Lexington for the rest of 2009. Vaccine is provide to the state by the federal government. The state provides it to local health departments which decide how to be distribute it in the community.

So far, 35 Kentuckians have died of H1N1. The number of cases of H1N1 in Kentucky has waned in recent weeks, but H1N1 is still more widespread than at the peak of regular flu season. Health officials say vaccination is a key defense against catching the flu.
