The unusual births of Amanda and Hannah Clouse don't make news every year.
Just once in a blue moon.
Amanda, the last baby born in Lexington in 1990, came into the world at 11:47 p.m. on Dec. 31. Hannah, her twin sister, was born at 12:02 a.m. on Jan. 1, 1991.
They were born on different days, months, years and, in a technical sense, decades (because there was no Year 0, the decade of the 1990s didn't begin until 1991).
The story of their births appeared in the Herald-Leader on Jan. 2, 1991.
Their mother, Cindy Clouse of Nicholasville, did some research and found that there is a New Year's Eve blue moon this year for the first time since 1990-1991.
The term blue moon has come to mean the second full moon in a month; it also means a rare occurrence.
"I thought this would be a good time for an update on Lexington's unique twins since their birthday coincides with this rare lunar event," Cindy wrote in an e-mail.
She described her twins as " lovely, smart girls — the kind that occur 'once in a blue moon.'"
